The Trustees and staff of the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust welcomed 42 new Nina Mason Pulliam Legacy Scholars to cohort six at July luncheons in Phoenix and Indianapolis.

"These luncheons are truly inspiring," said Trustee Nancy Russell. "It is a highlight of our year getting to meet the Nina Scholars and celebrate their new beginnings, as they embark on the first semester of their college experiences."

Thirty-two women and 10 men comprise the sixth cohort of Nina Scholars: seven students at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis; 12 students at Ivy Tech Community College-Central Indiana; 15 students at Maricopa Community Colleges in metropolitan Phoenix and eight students at Arizona State University.

"Our Scholars face a myriad of challenges. The Nina Scholars program was the first college scholarship program in the country to specifically address the needs of our three student groups," said Trustee Chairman Frank E. Russell.

Of this year's Scholars, 24 Scholars represent adults who are 25 years and older and have dependents living in the household; 12 Scholars were raised in the child welfare system and are 18 years old and self supporting; and six Scholars have physical disabilities. "The Nina Scholars program is an exciting dimension for the Trust. It allows us to expand the focus of the Trust's primary giving area, Helping People in Need," Russell added. "The Scholars program takes our mission to another level."

"Education was very important to Nina," said Trustee Carol Peden Schilling and niece to Nina Pulliam. "Nina believed education was a tool for self-sufficiency and empowerment. Throughout her lifetime, Nina helped many individuals realize the dream of a college education."

"This year we are pleased to announce Nina Scholars program enhancements designed to meet the needs of our students," Schilling added. "ASU and IUPUI have worked with the Trust to initiate the Passport Program, which makes it possible for up to three students at both Ivy Tech and MCC to transfer to their respective university and earn bachelor's degrees."

In addition, the Nina Scholars cohort at IUPUI added two additional scholarships, expanding from five to seven students this year.

"Many of our Scholars have been recommended to us by organizations that have received Trust grants," Nancy Russell added. "It is not too early to begin thinking about cohort seven's recommendations. Applications will be available in January and accessible from the Trust's web site."

Support for the Nina Scholars includes full resident tuition, and expenses for books and student fees. In addition, an annual living allowance of $2,500 may be applied to other expenses, such as housing, transportation, childcare and health insurance.
